Vellore Srinivasan's work on Composting and Zero Waste ManagementZWM for the first time in villages17 lakh has been sanctioned by the DRDA (District Rural Development Agency) for introducing Zero Waste Management (ZWM) in 4 village panchayats with a total of 6450 families. ZWM in villages at this scale is being tried out for the first time. This will create 63 new jobs for workers and supervisors. These 4 villages again fall under the total of 60 villages around the Vellore hills.Though Srinivasan has excellent support
in Vellore (his friends, family and the government officials), he feels
the need for a full-time co-worker. A few of his friends are willing to
give up their jobs and join his work full-time, if they have some financial
support. Any takers?
Kammovan PettaiSrinivasan has set up a Youth Group of 15 members who help organising students camp for the Hill project. The Village has about 850 families.
For waste management, the Village panchayat has allotted space for composting.
Two tricycle have been purchased. Four village beautifiers have been appointed
and the wok is to start shortly. DRDA has committed to pay 90 % of the
cost of the compost yard and startup and the village community is the pay
the balance 10% . the total project cost is Rs. 3.5 lak
Vellore Fish Market and Compost yardThere are a total of 105 shops in the market. The market is cleaned every 3 hrs by 8 workers who work from 7 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. A final cleaning is done before they leave at 6.30 p.m. The market is unimaginably clean, especially for a fish market in a small town.Every 2 hours, 2 tricycle loads of highly perishable garbage and 1 of waste water of 400 lit capacity is received from the market at the Compost yard. Total per day is about 1.5 tons. No waste water form the market is let into the public open drains. It is collected transported by tricycle to the Compost yard and fully used in the composting process. The Present compost shed of 70 ft x 30 ft dimension was nearly full when we visited it. Because of the high volume of waste being handled in the restricted space, anaerobic conditions had set in. Dr.Ismail and Vijay Anand suggested adding vinegar and jaggery solution to the waste to reduce the acidity and increase the carbon input so that the Ammonia generated by the anaerobic conditions gets neutralised. They strongly recommended expanding the yard.Srinivasan has been able to get the Municipal body to put up a new compost shed which will become functional shortly and reduce the pressure on the existing shed. Srinivasan seems to be getting good encouragement both from the Market traders and the Municipal Corporation for this project but there is a perpetual cash crunch. Srinivasan doesn't earn any money from this, though he spends a lot on travel, telephone etc on this project. Pallikuppam Village, Katpadi Town Panchayat Limit. (ward)400 families in the village,300 families covered by door to door garbage collection scheme 100-150 kg per day generated of which 10 kg is inorganic and rest organic A compost shed of 90ft x 25ft dimension has been put up with 4 compost beds. 1 garbage collection tricycle bas been purchased with funds of Rs.15,000/- from Students Partnership World Wide. With this Rs.15,000/- (25%) as "community contribution", Srinivasan obtained a further 45,000/- (75%) from District Rural Development Agency to make up a total of Rs.60,000/- as the project cost. Household contributes by Rs.10/- per month for the door to door garbage collection. A Pallikuppam Youth Exnora has been formed which runs the door to door collection composting. Temple Composting ProjectSri Narayani Sidder Peedam is a temple in MalaiKodi village, which is 8 Kms from Vellore Town. Last year, we have launched the Garbage Composting project as a pilot project in that Temple and its guest House. It was very successful in a small thatched Shed. Now the project was extended to the same village ( Total No: 341 families) and new permanent shed (Size 90’ x 24’ - cost Rs.3.25 Lakhs) was constructed by the Temple administration and tricycle, Dustbins, tools and implements were also donated by them. Now, 12 workers and 2 Supervisors are working under this scheme through Exnora and the temple administration is paying their salary amount of Rs.21,000/- every month. (Rs.1500/- each) The project is self sustaining. Two important young chaps ( Mr.Suresh & Mr.Balaji ) are in charge of this project and now organic manure is useful to temple Garden. In this composting project, Garlands ( Flowers), Plantain leaves, Elephant dung, Kitchen and Garden waste and waste water from temple are getting composted separately. This makes the entire village clean and becomes very good model for other temples and other worshipping places. Very soon we are planning to release a CD on solid Waste Management in Temple area.
